In Front of the Well House, 16 x 20, oil on canvas, c. 1948, signed LRC J H Sharp
“In Front of the Well House” (c. 1948) appears to feature one of Sharp’s favorite models, the Taos girl Leaf Down. Her striking yellow shawl and stoic expression can also be found in the canvases “Leaf Down in the Door Way” and “Leaf Down at Studio Door.” All three luminous portraits reveal Sharp’s search for the perfect spot on studio grounds to capture the model’s contemplative beauty. “In Front of the Well House” is arguably the most powerful of the three because it gives the strongest sense of personality. While the other canvases keep her aloof, “Well House” gives Down the opportunity to lock eyes with the viewer confidently from the camouflage of green dapples and speckled lattice.
