Untitled, 15.5 x 19.5, oil on canvas

Although untitled, Coe’s painting appears to be his impression of New England in the winter-spring transition. Coe perfectly captures that magical time when denuded branches stretch up and evaporate, and manmade structures lose their edges and sparkle like mirages in the crystalline air. Coe heightens this shivering appearance by deploying an eye-dazzling palette of plum red, sap green, spring mint and sun pink.

The work’s Impressionist dollops and Fauvist palette indicate that the memory of Coe’s European study tour is fresh. Additionally, Coe had returned to the States “several years” before his 1912 Town & Country article. Therefore, this canvas likely came to life between 1905 and 1925.
